Personal Summary

Dean is an experienced, versatile chartered engineer educated to master’s degree level in Mechanical Engineering with circa 20 years’ experience across the nuclear, defence, motorsport, automotive and aerospace industries.  His core technical skill set is in the design, analysis and substantiation of metallic and composite structures and equipment.   He possess a sound understanding of fundamental engineering principles, and is experienced in developing robust, pragmatic solutions for complex problems.

 

He is also experienced in building and leading multidisciplinary engineering teams, employing a can do, team player, lead by example approach.  He has a strong technical bias and endeavours to continuously maintain and broaden his own technical knowledge and experience.  He has developed a unique, broad and well-balanced understanding of many aspects of multidisciplinary engineering projects that enables him to navigate toward successful delivery.

Dean has a proven track record in the technical delivery of engineering projects from inception, i.e. Front End Engineering Design (FEED) through to production or installation and commissioning.

Gattaca Projects – April 2020 to Present

Senior Engineering Manager – April 2024 to Present

Responsible for building and leading a multidisciplinary team of 20+ engineers in the design of all process plant & equipment, e.g. gloveboxes, including all HVAC, electrical, control and safety systems, for a repurposed facility for processing high hazard components.  From project inception into detailed design. Other responsibilities included support to building and managing schedules of work and tendering work between project phases.

Lead Engineer – April 2020 to January 2025

Responsible for coordinating the technical delivery of various process plant & equipment and high integrity mechanical handling equipment on behalf of the client.  Involved engaging and technically managing the supply chain, and interrogating the designs produced by external contractors.  From project inception; interpretation of user requirements and authoring of tender documentation (Scopes of Work and Technical Specifications), through to design, manufacture and commissioning of the equipment.  Coordinated design development and delivery of supporting documentation, ensuring designs are compliant with relevant design standards and robustly substantiated in line with client requirements.

Engineering Manager – December 2014 to June 2016

Responsible for leading a multidisciplinary team, made up of internal and external staff, contractors and technical specialists, in the technical delivery of a large package of work primarily made up of high integrity, safety critical process, plant & equipment.  With the objective to ensure compliant and licensable designs, meeting both the customer and nuclear safety case requirements, within the cost and schedule constraints of the project. Other responsibilities included acting as a technical specialist in engineering design and analysis on behalf of the client; supporting design and analysis rationalisation across various areas of the project in support of cost and schedule optimisation.  Furthermore, supporting and advising senior management in key business decisions.

Mechanical Handling Engineer – April 2014 to December 2014

Responsible for providing mechanical engineering support in the design, substantiation and integration of high integrity nuclear implicated mechanical handling and process equipment within a large multidisciplinary project. Working with the supply chain on behalf of the client ensuring engineered solutions and the supporting substantiation are pragmatic and fit for purpose, whilst meeting the requirements of the safety case.

Sahara Force India Formula One Team – Stress Engineer – July 2012 to April 2014

Jointly responsible for the analysis of all parts critical to the performance and reliability of the car.  Duties included the analysis of both metallic and composite parts and assemblies using a range of analysis techniques including hand calculations and finite element analysis.  Major assemblies/parts of the car I was responsible for included; suspension, front wing and impact structure, and tyre modelling.

Atkins – Engineering Consultant – August 2008 to July 2012

Provided mechanical engineering support on a number of multidisciplinary projects for clients in the energy, nuclear and defence industries, e.g.

  • Probabilistic Safety Assessments, relating to nuclear power stations
  • Various projects involving Finite Element Analysis, e.g. non-linear blast analysis of submarine heat exchanger
  • Detailed design and substantiation of a series of high integrity blast and containment doors
  • Detailed design and substantiation of a group of tools for use in the defueling of submarines

Non-technical aspects included delegate management responsibilities, which included resourcing a team of 10 technical staff and supporting the recruitment programme.
